VCU French Film Festival Field Trip - March 28

Chers élèves,

Every year Madame Reeves and I take students to the Festival. It is a great opportunity to watch very good French films and to meet actors and directors. This festival is the best French film festival in the country, so we are very lucky! The festival will be on Saturday, March 28. The cost is $45 per student and this includes a pass for all the movies both on Saturday and Sunday. I am exploring the option of an overnight stay in Richmond and will let you know if it is indeed possible.

In order to make this outing possible, we need to order the passes and send the money next week. This is a very well attended event and if we wait until March 16 the event will be sold out. If you want to participate, please bring a check or cash to the Upper School by Thursday next week.

Projet francophone - Introduction

1. Choose two French-speaking countries and fill out the chart on p. 11 of your workbook.

Prénoms francophones

Choose a francophone first name (prénom) to be your identity in French class. Bring your name and its country of origin into class by Monday to introduce your new identity. The following sites have lists of names. Read the explanation of French names on the first site, then search the lists of names from France and other French-speaking countries on that and the following sites.

Sound document project

1. Find a French-speaking (or singing) sound document on the Internet using the following websites. Email me the url for the document you have chosen along with your analysis of the sound document using the questions from class (written below).

• Fables
• Speeches
• Letters
• Others

Last Year's Francophone Food Project

For our food project, each student will research a recipe from a French-speaking country. This can be the country you studied in the beginning of the year but does not have to be. The recipe may be in English. We will translate it into French in class.

Parts of project:
-Find recipe (due Tuesday, May 6th): use the recipe resources on the "Food Project" site linked on the right side of our blog.
-Translate recipe into French (in class)
-Prepare recipe and present dish with a short explanation in class (2-3 minutes) of its country of origin and any relevant food customs. (Thursday, May 8th)
-Enjoy foods from different French-speaking countries!

Specifics for the presentation will be presented in class next week. For now, find a recipe in your assigned food category and be sure to know its country of origin.

Episode 5 du film: Le Chemin du retour

Here is an excellent summary of the episode of the film for Chapter 5: Secrets. Notice the use of the passé composé verb tense.

Dans l'épisode "Secrets", Sonia est allée à l'école de Yasmine. Rachid est allé à l'appartement de Camille et il a fait la connaissance de Mado, la mère de Camille. Mado a habité dans le même immeuble. Rachid a aimé le livre de Camille sur les Cévennes. Alors, Mado s'est méfiée de (didn't trust) Rachid.

Draw your dream home on an unlined piece of paper. Label each room and each piece of furniture using at least 10 words from the vocabulary in Chapter 5. Use color and remember that creativity and accuracy count!

Watch the commercials during the Superbowl and analyze the view of Amercian culture that is shown. Imagine that this is the only glimpse of American culture that you would see. What do you think? (If you do not watch the Superbowl, then notice other advertisements in the newspaper, on TV, on the internet.)

Listening portion of the mid-term exam

The listening portion of the mid-term exam will be during class on Wednesday, December 19. It will be worth 50 points of a total 250 points on the complete mid-term exam.

Language elements covered: Grammar and vocabulary from Chapters 0-4. Use the Table of Contents in your textbook to find pages of review for these concepts.

Format:

• Dictation : a paragraph or series of sentences will be read aloud for you to fill in the missing words. Spelling counts!
• Grammar and vocabulary listening activities based on the activities done in the workbook. (Two activities will be taken directly from the workbook.) Access the full audio program that accompanies these activities on the Débuts web site to practice.
